What it is

Villa Morra and the surrounding neighborhoods are the hub of the capital's dining and nightlife. Paseo Carmelitas, an open-air complex on Avenida España, gathers restaurants, cafés and bars, surrounded by steakhouses, craft breweries and chef-driven kitchens. On Mariscal López you'll find Shopping Villa Morra and Mariscal López Shopping, and a few minutes away on Aviadores del Chaco, Shopping del Sol and Paseo La Galería, amid office towers and international hotels. By day it's a place for shopping and coffee; by night, especially Thursday to Saturday, it fills with people.

What to see and do

  • Dinner at Paseo Carmelitas or in the restaurants along Avenida España
  • Bars and clubs from Thursday to Saturday
  • Shopping del Sol and Paseo La Galería on Aviadores del Chaco

Did you know…?

Francisco Morra opened Asunción's first public bathhouse here, complete with a pool and showers.

Its first streets had names like Palm Trees Street, Memories Street, Artists' Street and Hunters' Street.

In the 1950s a municipal market stood where Plaza Olímpica is today.

History

The neighborhood was founded on February 6, 1888, by Italian physician Francisco Morra, a native of Cerignola and owner of Asunción's tramway company, who subdivided a large estate into 147 blocks near La Recoleta. In the early 20th century it was an area of country houses and dirt roads; today it's one of the city's main residential, commercial and dining hubs.

Tips

  • Nightlife starts late: bars get lively after 22:00, and clubs after midnight.
  • Get around by taxi or app between venues; distances are short but sidewalks are uneven.
  • Many places take cards, but it's wise to carry some cash in guaraníes.

Malls open daily; restaurants and bars vary by venue (check before you go).

Best time: Thursday to Saturday nights; in summer, rooftop terraces after sunset.

What to try

  • Grilled cuts at one of its parrillas (steakhouses)
  • Paraguayan craft beer
  • Chef-driven Paraguayan cuisine, with creative takes on cassava, surubí (a large river catfish) and chipa guasu (a soufflé-like corn and cheese bake)
