Cementerio de la Recoleta
Paraguay's first public cemetery, still in use: an open-air museum of mausoleums and famous figures.
What it is
Seventeen hectares of tree-lined lanes, chapels, sculptures and mausoleums ranging from neoclassical to modernist. Presidents, war heroes, writers and musicians rest here, alongside sections for the Italian, Spanish, Jewish and international communities. Among the most visited graves are those of Elisa Alicia Lynch, partner of Marshal López, and writer Augusto Roa Bastos. Next to the cemetery, the 1860 Church of the Santísimo Sacramento de la Recoleta completes the ensemble. It's a quiet walk full of stories.
What to see and do
- The mausoleum of Elisa Alicia Lynch
- The grave of Augusto Roa Bastos
- Sculptures and pantheons of the immigrant communities
- The Church of the Santísimo Sacramento de la Recoleta (1860)
Did you know…?
It holds more than 18,000 graves; before 1842 the dead were buried in churches or in the courtyards of homes.
The grave of Corinna Adelaide Lynch, daughter of Marshal López and Elisa Lynch, is the oldest still standing.
Also buried here are stunt pilot Silvio Pettirossi and General Andrés Rodríguez, who overthrew Stroessner in 1989.
History
In 1729 the Recollect Franciscans founded the convent of Jesús María here, which gave the neighborhood its name. After the religious orders were suppressed in 1824, the site served as barracks and a parish. On October 23, 1842, under the consulate of Carlos Antonio López and Mariano Roque Alonso, it was designated Asunción's official cemetery — the country's first general public cemetery.
Tips
- Several times a year, historians lead guided walks through the necropolis: follow SENATUR's events calendar.
- Visit during the day and be respectful: it's still in use and funerals may be taking place.
- Combine it with Villa Morra and Paseo Carmelitas, a few blocks away.
Daytime hours of the municipal cemetery (check before you go).
Best time: Cool mornings; in autumn and winter, with soft light for photos.
