August 15: Founding of Asunción and Feast of Our Lady of the Assumption
The birthday of the Mother of Cities coincides with the feast of its patron saint: Mass at the Cathedral, a public holiday and cultural events.
What it is
On August 15, 1537, the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin, Juan de Salazar built the fort that grew into Asunción. That’s why the date brings together two celebrations: the city’s founding and the feast of its patron, with the main Mass at the Metropolitan Cathedral. It’s a national holiday and, every five years, the day the new president takes office. The dry winter weather invites you to explore the historic center on foot.
What to see and do
- Mass in honor of Our Lady of the Assumption at the Cathedral
- Cultural events in the historic center
- A walk around the bay, the Cabildo and the Cathedral
Tips
Since it’s a holiday, museums and shops may change their hours: check before you go. In years when a new president is sworn in (the next is 2028), streets downtown are closed.
Dates may shift to the nearest weekend.
