What it is

Display cases filled with objects from Paraguay's Indigenous peoples: musical instruments, weapons, tools, funerary urns and the famous canoe-shaped altars. A map shows where each ethnic group lived before the Spanish arrived, and a photo gallery documents their daily life. It's a simple, old-fashioned museum, but its pieces are of enormous value for understanding the diversity of the country's 19 Indigenous peoples.

What to see and do

  • Canoe-shaped altars
  • Musical instruments and weapons from different ethnic groups

History

The founding charter, promoted by physician and philanthropist Andrés Barbero through the Scientific Society of Paraguay, dates from June 21, 1929, and the museum opened on November 28, 1933. It was organized by German ethnologist Max Schmidt (1934–1946); from 1952 it was directed by anthropologist Branislava Sušnik, who expanded the collections through journeys to Indigenous communities. The current building opened in 1956.
