What it is

Parque Caballero is an urban public space in the Ricardo Brugada neighbourhood, between Manuel Gondra and Andrés Barbero streets. Today it covers about 13 hectares of what used to be the country estate of Bernardino Caballero, a president of Paraguay, and mixes shade, paths and play areas with a small history museum. The General Bernardino Caballero Historical Museum is in the house where the former president lived until his death in 1912, and it keeps his furniture and personal belongings. The park also has an architectural viewpoint designed by architect Miguel Ángel Alfaro.

What to see and do

  • The house-museum where General Caballero lived
  • The viewpoint designed by Miguel Ángel Alfaro
  • Tree-lined paths for a quiet walk
  • El Chorrito, the park's historic spring

Did you know…?

The park began as Bernardino Caballero's own private country estate, hence its name.

One of its original features was El Chorrito, a natural spring that is still listed among the park's historic elements.

History

The municipality bought the Quinta Caballero through ordinance 895 of 31 March 1919 and formalised the purchase with ordinance 1569 of 26 January 1925. The official inauguration was in 1926. It originally covered about 20 hectares, with a natural spring called El Chorrito, gazebos, courts and a pool; the museum opened in 1977 and was restored in 2010 and 2012.
