Nuevo Cancionero paraguayo

The singer-songwriter movement of the 1970s: guitar, poetry and social conscience.

What it is

The Nuevo Cancionero was a singer-songwriter movement, inspired by similar currents across Latin America, that brought lyrics about poverty, struggle and oppression into Paraguayan music during the dictatorship. It was led by Maneco Galeano, Ricardo Flecha and Alberto Rodas, and groups such as Juglares, Sembrador and Ñamandú sang its songs. It is remembered today as one form of cultural resistance in those years; Maneco Galeano's 'Despertar' and 'Soy de la chacarita' are classics of the movement.
