Purahéi asy y purahéi jahe'o

The 'sorrowful song' of the Paraguayan countryside, the root from which the guarania grew.

What it is

Purahéi means 'song' in Guaraní, and purahéi asy is the 'sorrowful song': a slow, heartfelt tune sung in rural Paraguay long before the guarania existed. Music writers trace the guarania back to this tradition. In everyday speech, this kind of plaintive song is sometimes called, a bit mockingly, purahéi jahe'o ('crying song').

Did you know…?

A present-day Paraguayan jazz and soul band chose the name Purahéi Soul: 'song' in Guaraní plus 'soul' in English.

Listen to

Listen to classic guaranias sung in Guaraní and notice how the slow melody and plaintive voice come from this tradition.
