Paraguayan rock, pop and fusion today

From polka-rock to cumbia-ska: the current scene you'll hear in Asunción.

What it is

Paraguayan rock grew after the return to democracy in 1989. In the 2000s Paiko scored a hit with a rock version of 'Kurusu vera', and bands such as Salamandra, Revolber, Flou and Ese Ka'a packed venues; La Secreta fused the polka's 6/8 with rock. Kchiporros (Asunción, 2006) mixes ska, cumbia and pop, and the indie scene has grown with EEEKS and other groups. Before that, in the late 1960s, beat groups such as Los Rebeldes, Los Blue Caps and the duo IODI made the first Paraguayan rock records, and in 1983 Pro Rock Ensamble released 'Música para los perros', the first full-length album by a clearly rock-oriented Paraguayan band.

In 2025 Kchiporros released the album 'Todo el mundo está kaliente!' and tours Latin America and Europe.
