Guarania

The slow, melancholy song form José Asunción Flores created in 1925, on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list since 2024.

What it is

The guarania is a slow-tempo vocal and instrumental genre, almost always in a minor key, that allows for long, expressive melodic lines. Flores took the name from the poem 'Canto a la raza' by Guillermo Molinas Rolón. It is sung in Guaraní and Spanish, with guitar, harp or full orchestra, and it is the music of nostalgia and love for the homeland. Its roots lie in the purahéi asy ('sorrowful song' in Guaraní), a slow, melancholic rural song that was common across the countryside.

Did you know…?

From the 1940s on, the guarania became hugely popular in Brazil, where the duo Cascatinha e Inhana scored a big hit with 'Índia' in Portuguese.
