Kyre'ỹ
A lighter variant of the polka, tinted with the melancholy of the guarania.
What it is
The kyre'ỹ (also spelled kyre'y) is one of the Paraguayan polka's variants, traditionally played on guitars and harps. Scholars describe it as close to the polka and the galop in form, but carrying the expressive stamp of the guarania; the literature ties it to José Asunción Flores. It lives alongside other polka variants such as the galopa, the polca syryry or the popo.
Did you know…?
Sources spell it two ways, kyre'y and kyre'ỹ; this guide uses the nasal-tilde spelling.
Listen to
Ask a harpist to play a polka and then a kyre'ỹ back to back: the difference is in the pulse and the more soulful feel of the second.
