Compuesto

The song that tells a story: crimes, love affairs and real events turned into verse.

What it is

The compuesto is a style of sung storytelling: it recounts real or invented events with deep feeling. Among the best known are the ballads about Pancha Garmendia or about Emilio and Lucía, spread by the 'compuesteros' of Carapeguá. It is an oral tradition that works as popular chronicle, and is often associated with the rasguido doble.

Did you know…?

Herminio Giménez, one of Paraguay's great composers, wrote a piece dedicated to Panchita Garmendia.
