Herminio Giménez

Composer and conductor behind Lejanía, Cerro Corá and Panchita Garmendia.

What it is

Herminio Giménez (General Caballero, 1905 – Asunción, 1991) was a prodigy: he wrote his first polka at 11. He was part of the orchestra that in 1927 recorded the first album devoted entirely to Paraguayan music. During the Chaco War he led a military band, and later lived in exile in Argentina, mostly in Corrientes. He composed guaranias, polkas, dances and waltzes, including 'Lejanía', 'Cerro Corá', 'Che trompo arasá' and 'Canción del arpa dormida', and scored several films. He returned to Paraguay after 1989.

Did you know…?

In 1975 he presented his 'Misa Folklórica Paraguaya' in Asunción, despite being an exile.
