What it is
Demetrio Ortiz (Piribebuy, 1916 – Buenos Aires, 1975) was a musician, composer, playwright and choreographer of Paraguayan dances. As a boy he shined shoes and sold newspapers; he learned guitar from a neighbor. In 1943, in Concepción, he composed 'Mis noches sin ti', his first 'travelling' guarania, dedicated to his mother. In 1948, playing in Córdoba (Argentina) with Félix Pérez Cardozo's ensemble, he composed 'Recuerdos de Ypacaraí', which crossed borders. He also wrote an autobiography, 'Una guitarra… un hombre'.
