Agustín Barboza

A voice of the great Paraguayan duets, who sang the first recorded guarania.

What it is

Agustín Pío Barboza (Asunción, 1913 – 1998) was a singer and composer. He traveled to Buenos Aires at 16, worked as a dockhand and sang a cappella at gatherings. In 1933 he met José Asunción Flores and the next year recorded 'Ñasaindype', the first guarania put on disc. He joined Flores's 'Orquesta Ortiz Guerrero'. He wrote around 80 compositions, among them 'Alma vibrante', 'Flor de Pilar' and 'Mi patria soñada'. In 1994 he received the Orden Nacional al Mérito and in 1996 published 'Ruego y camino'.

In 1953 he joined the trio Los Paraguayos alongside Luis Alberto del Paraná.
