Palacio de López (Palacio de Gobierno)
The palace Carlos Antonio López had built for his son, now the seat of the executive branch overlooking the bay.
What it is
White, symmetrical and facing the river, the Palacio de López is Paraguay's most recognizable postcard. Its neoclassical style with Palladian touches, arched galleries and central tower are best admired from the esplanade and from the Costanera, especially in the late afternoon when the lights come on. As the official seat of the Presidency, it can usually only be enjoyed from the outside. Across the way opens the Bay of Asunción, and just steps away the Manzana de la Rivera and the Cabildo round out the stroll.
What to see and do
- The illuminated façade at dusk, seen from the esplanade or the Costanera
- The central tower and arched galleries above the bay
- Pair it with the Manzana de la Rivera, right across the street
- Special guided tours whenever the City or the Presidency opens them
Did you know…?
It was designed as a private home, not a seat of government: Francisco Solano López never lived there.
After the war, Brazilian troops used it as barracks for about seven years.
French painter Julio Mornet created several of the paintings that decorate its ceilings.
History
Carlos Antonio López ordered its construction in 1857 as a residence for his son, Francisco Solano López, with English master builder Alonso Taylor and Hungarian engineer Francisco Wisner de Morgenstern involved in the project. Solano López never got to live in it: the War of the Triple Alliance (1864–1870) caught it unfinished, and during the seven-year Allied occupation of Asunción it served as barracks for Brazilian forces. Restored at the end of the 19th century, it only began functioning as the seat of government under Juan Bautista Egusquiza, in 1894.
Tips
- The interior is not regularly open to the public: usually you can only view it from outside.
- Security is tight; respect the barriers and don't fly drones.
- The best photo is at sunset from the Costanera, with the bay in the background.
Exterior viewing any time, 24 hours; interior access only on special guided tours (check before you go).
Best time: At sunset and after dark, when the lights are on; avoid summer middays.
