What it is

Throughout June, peaking on the night of the 23rd to the 24th, Asunción's schools, clubs, parishes and neighborhood committees put on their own "San Juan." There are traditional games such as pelota tata (a flaming rag ball that gets kicked around), tata ári jehasa (walking barefoot over hot coals), toro candil (a "bull" with blazing horns), kambuchi jejoka (breaking a clay pot while blindfolded) and the burning of the Judas kái effigy. Between polkas and guaranias, people feast on chipa, mbeju (a crisp cassava-starch and cheese flatbread), pastel mandi'o (fried cassava-dough turnovers), butifarra sausage and other winter treats.

What to see and do

  • Pelota tata and toro candil
  • Kambuchi jejoka and other games for kids
  • Tables of traditional food: chipa, mbeju, pastel mandi'o, butifarra
  • Live polka and guarania music

Did you know…?

For tata ári jehasa, people walk barefoot across about five meters of hot coals; tradition links it to faith.

The Judas kái is a life-size effigy stuffed with firecrackers that is burned at the end of the party.

In toro candil, someone dressed as a bull with flaming horns charges through the crowd.

History

The feast of Saint John the Baptist, on June 24, arrived with Spanish colonization and in Paraguay blended with local rural traditions. Today it's one of the best-loved folk celebrations of winter, repeated across the country throughout June.

Tips

  • Look up the San Juan schedules of schools, clubs and parishes: many are open to the public and raise funds for good causes.
  • Watch the fire games from a safe distance, especially with children.
  • Bring a warm layer: June nights can be cold.

Dates and times vary by organizer (check before you go).

Best time: All of June; the main night is June 23 to 24.

What to try

  • Chipa and mbeju
  • Pastel mandi'o
  • Payagua mascada (cassava and meat patties) and butifarra
