What it is

Horqueta, the department's second city, is a must-stop on the road between Concepción and Pedro Juan Caballero. Its pride is saddlery: handmade leather saddles, belts, bags and riding gear with the look of the north's cattle country. It's known as the 'Capital of Ka'a He'ẽ', after stevia, and the surrounding countryside has ranches where you can go horseback riding, fishing or exploring dirt roads between pastures. In summer, locals head for the beaches of the Aquidabán River, such as those at Paso Mbutú. It's a hardworking, unpretentious town, ideal for buying authentic handicrafts.

What to see and do

  • Leather workshops and shops: saddles, belts and bags
  • Beaches on the Aquidabán River at Paso Mbutú
  • Horseback rides and visits to nearby estancias (cattle ranches)
  • The patron-saint feast of Our Lady of the Rosary (October)

Did you know…?

Ka'a he'ẽ means 'sweet herb' in Guarani: it's stevia, a native plant described for science by Moisés Bertoni between 1899 and 1905.

The town's name recalls a horqueta, a fork where oxcart trails crossed.

Its patron saint is Our Lady of the Rosary, celebrated in October.

History

It grew up around a chapel and was officially founded in 1793 by Juan Manuel Gamarra and Andrés Salinas. Its name comes from 'Tape Horqueta', the fork in the road where oxcarts rested on the long journeys of the north. Today it has around 39,500 inhabitants (2022 census) and lives off farming, cattle ranching, yerba mate and leather.

Tips

  • If you buy saddles or other large pieces, ask about shipping to Asunción.
  • The Aquidabán beaches depend on the river level: after floods they may be closed.
  • It's a good pit stop on the way to Cerro Corá or Pedro Juan Caballero.

Best time: Year-round for shopping; December to March for the Aquidabán beaches; October for the patron-saint feast.

What to try

  • Asado made with northern beef
  • Chipa and sopa paraguaya (a savory cornbread) at roadside eateries
