What it is

Concepción is the north's main base and a city made for unhurried strolling. Its historic center preserves mansions from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, relics of the days when the port moved the riches of the Chaco. The Museo del Cuartel de la Villa Real, a former barracks from the time of Solano López, tells two centuries of regional history; the cathedral holds an altarpiece by Carlos Colombino, and the 24-meter monument to Mary Help of Christians towers over downtown. When the sun goes down, everyone heads to the Puerto Viejo (Old Port). From here, launches and riverboats set off, and roads fan out to Tagatiyá, Vallemí and Cerro Corá.

What to see and do

  • Wandering the historic center and its late-19th and early-20th-century mansions
  • Museo del Cuartel de la Villa Real: weapons, documents and old photos of the port (free admission)
  • The cathedral with Carlos Colombino's altarpiece, and the monument to Mary Help of Christians
  • The open-air museum on Avenida Pinedo, with historic vehicles and machinery
  • Sunset at the Puerto Viejo and a boat ride to the Chaco shore
  • Expo Concepción (formerly Expo Norte), a cattle and trade fair held in late August and early September

Did you know…?

Its colonial name was Villa Real de la Concepción, which is why its history museum is called 'del Cuartel de la Villa Real' (of the Royal Town Barracks).

The cathedral's high altar (1987), depicting the Resurrection, is the work of Carlos Colombino, an artist born in Concepción.

The monument to Mary Help of Christians, unveiled on May 24, 2002, stands 24 m tall, 12 of which are the statue itself.

The traditional Expo Norte was renamed Expo Concepción in 2026, when the regional branch of the Rural Association of Paraguay (ARP) took over its full organization for the first time.

History

It was founded on May 25, 1773, by Governor Agustín Fernando de Pinedo as Villa Real de la Concepción, to halt Portuguese expansion and Indigenous raids from the north. The barracks that now houses the museum was built in the time of Solano López (SENATUR, the national tourism office, gives 1864) and has been under restoration since 1998. The city boomed in the early 20th century as a port for yerba mate, timber and cattle, and in 1947 it was a central stage of Paraguay's civil war. It has 73,360 inhabitants (2022 census).

Tips

  • In summer temperatures climb past 38-40 °C: explore downtown early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
  • The Museo del Cuartel is free and opens in the mornings (tourism sources list Monday to Saturday, 7:00-12:00). Check before you go.
  • Expo Concepción 2026 ran from August 30-31 (depending on the source) to September 6 at the Nanawa fairgrounds; dates change every year.
  • It's the best base for Tagatiyá, Vallemí and Belén; on December 8 the city celebrates its patron saint, the Immaculate Conception.

Museo del Cuartel de la Villa Real: free admission; morning hours (for reference: Monday to Saturday, 7:00 to 12:00). Check before you go.

Best time: May to September to explore the city in mild weather; sunsets at the port all year round. Late August and early September for Expo Concepción, and December 8 for the patron-saint feast. January and February are very hot and rainy.

What to try

  • Paraguay River fish such as surubí (a large catfish), pacú or dorado (respecting the year-end fishing ban)
  • Grilled beef from the north's cattle country
  • Chipa (cheesy cassava bread) and cocido (sweet toasted-yerba tea) at the municipal market in the morning
