Estación de Maciel y su Festival de la Estación
An old station 10 km from Caazapá that was for years the town's only link, now home to a cultural festival.
What it is
Maciel is a small town in Caazapá, 10 km from the departmental capital, and its main attractions are its colonial houses and the old railway station, which in earlier times was the only link with the rest of the country. Trains no longer run, but it remains a point of tourist interest, although its state of conservation is modest. Since 2012 the Festival de la Estación has been held on the esplanade of the former station around 24 and 25 April, organised by a culture-support commission under the municipality. It is a short railway-heritage stop to combine with Caazapá, Yuty and the Franciscan route.
