A sugar town on the Tebicuarymí with its old railway station, linked to the childhood of writer Roa Bastos.
What it is
Iturbe lies in the southwest of Guairá, on the right bank of the Tebicuarymí River. It stands out for sugar production and, according to the account gathered on Wikipedia, the writer Augusto Roa Bastos, one of the great names of Latin American literature, spent his childhood in this town; Felipe Alvarenga Semidei also lived here as a child. The old Iturbe station of the Carlos Antonio López Railway is part of the landscape and a reminder that the town grew beside the track. Fishing and strolling along the Tebicuarymí are other activities in the area. It is a point of interest for anyone following the department's cultural route and wanting to see towns tied to literary history.
