San Salvador: estación Borja, museo histórico y biblioteca
A town born along the railway tracks, with a museum and library built from remains of the old station.
What it is
San Salvador lies about 23 km south of Villarrica and was born along the old railway tracks. What is now the town was a settlement of Borja where the Borja station stood. When the railway opened in 1890, the station became the area's main source of jobs and hotels, bars and shops grew up around it. Together with the Sapucái and Salitre Cué stations, it was a water and firewood resupply point for trips between Asunción and Encarnación. In 1951 the settlement became a municipality under the name San Salvador. In 2005, with the line out of use, tons of rails and equipment began to be sold off as scrap; to avoid complete dismantling, residents and authorities set up a historical museum and a municipal library with the rescued remains. It is a good place to understand railway life. The district is also one of the few in the country that produce blueberries.
