What it is

Paraguay's second city and the capital of Alto Paraná, Ciudad del Este lives hand in hand with the Friendship Bridge, which links it to Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil. Its downtown is a hive of arcades, malls and street vendors, where Brazilians and Argentines come to buy electronics, perfume and imported goods. But the city also knows how to slow down: there's the Lago de la República, the Manuel Ortiz Guerrero Linear Park and the El Mensú Museum, housed in the city's very first building. Its mix of Paraguayans, Lebanese, Chinese, Taiwanese, Koreans and Brazilians shows up both on the table and on the street.

What to see and do

  • Wander the downtown and big stores such as Shopping París, Shopping China or New Zone Importados, some of them open late into the evening
  • Watch the Friendship Bridge and the constant comings and goings across the border with Foz do Iguaçu
  • Visit the El Mensú Museum, with pioneers' tools, Chaco War objects and photos of the city's founding
  • Walk or cycle in Itaipú's Manuel Ortiz Guerrero Linear Park (open daily until 21:00)
  • Enjoy the sunset and craft breweries around the Lago de la República

Did you know…?

The Friendship Bridge is 552 meters long, and when it was completed its concrete arch (a 290 m span) was the longest of its kind in the world, until it was surpassed by Australia's Gladesville Bridge in 1964.

The El Mensú Museum occupies the city's first building: a prefabricated wooden house brought over from Encarnación in 1957.

The San Blas Cathedral was damaged by fire on February 9, 2026; reconstruction began in September 2026 and it is expected to reopen around February 3, 2027.

The "jacaré" (yacaré caiman), which sometimes shows itself in the Lago de la República, is one of the symbols the municipality uses in its city branding.

History

It was founded on February 3, 1957, as Puerto Flor de Lis, at the height of the "March to the East"; soon afterward it was renamed Puerto Presidente Stroessner and, after the fall of the dictatorship in 1989, it took its current name. The Friendship Bridge, officially inaugurated on March 27, 1965, and the construction of Itaipú from 1975 onward turned it into one of the largest open-air shopping centers in South America.

Tips

  • If you're continuing into the interior of the country, get your entry stamped at Immigration when you cross the Friendship Bridge, with your ID card or passport.
  • Compare prices, ask for an official invoice (factura legal) and confirm the warranty before buying electronics.
  • Downtown gets very crowded: keep an eye on your belongings and use taxis or ride-hailing apps to get around at night.
  • During Holy Week and the winter holidays (July) there are long lines at the bridge and hotels are nearly full: book well ahead.

Downtown shops open during the day; several of the big malls stay open into the evening (check before you go). The San Blas Cathedral is closed for reconstruction until at least February 2027.

Best time: Year-round. In summer (December to February) it's best to shop early and avoid the midday heat. From late November to the end of December, the Navidad del Este (Christmas in the East) lights up the city; on February 3 the city celebrates its anniversary and its patron saint, San Blas.

What to try

  • Hot chipa (Paraguay's cheesy cassava-flour bread), the classic welcome on public holidays
  • Arab cuisine, a legacy of the Lebanese community
  • Reviro, the dish of the old mensúes (yerba mate laborers) of Alto Paraná
