Ha mboriahú

Teodoro S. Mongelós's social poem, set to music by Emilio Bigi (1943).

What it is

'Ha mboriahú' ('and the poor') is a poem by Teodoro S. Mongelós, the 'poet of the humble', set to music by Emilio Bigi in 1943. Elvio Romero considered it the most painfully beautiful social plea on behalf of Paraguay's dispossessed. Mongelós, who fought in the Chaco War at 17, wrote many Guaraní-language lyrics that are classics today.

Did you know…?

Mongelós died in exile in São Paulo; his remains were repatriated to Ypacaraí in 1994.
