Pájaro campana (The Bellbird)
The polka that recreates on the harp the metallic call of the national bird.
What it is
It is one of the most-performed Paraguayan pieces at home and abroad: the harp reproduces the metallic clang of the bare-throated bellbird (Procnias nudicollis) with trills, strikes and glissandos that put the performer to the test. It's a showpiece at any harp concert and a staple of peñas (folk music venues) and dinner shows. It is also known in Guaraní as Guyra campana.
Did you know…?
Félix Pérez Cardozo made it famous with his harp version (listed among his works as 'Guyra campana'). The bellbird has been the national bird since 2004.
