San Bernardino
An 1881 German colony on the shores of Ypacaraí and Paraguay's summer capital: lakeside promenade, bars and long nights.
What it is
Central European-style mansions, tree-lined streets on rolling hills and the lake out front: San Ber, as everyone calls it, has been the lakeside resort of Asunción families for more than a century. From December to mid-February it fills up with holidaymakers, music and nightlife; the rest of the year it's a quiet town for strolling the promenade and climbing up to the Bella Vista lookout. The Hotel del Lago, dating from 1888, still carries the air of the founding colony.
What to see and do
- The 850 m lakeside promenade at sunset, on foot or by bike
- The Bella Vista lookout, next to the church, with views over the lake
- Hotel del Lago (1888): a hotel-museum with an ethnobotanical garden of native species
- Fairs, music and food at Casa Hassler on summer weekends
- Downtown bars and breweries, buzzing during the summer season
Did you know…?
Bernhard Förster, husband of Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche, spent his last six weeks at the Hotel del Lago and died there on June 3, 1889.
Emil Hassler's herbarium, covering nearly 90% of Paraguay's known plant species, is kept at the Conservatory and Botanical Garden of Geneva (Switzerland).
During the Chaco War (1932-1935), Hassler founded and ran a hospital for the wounded in San Bernardino.
History
It was founded on August 24, 1881 by German and Swiss-German immigrants and named after President Bernardino Caballero. In 1888 the German Guillermo Weiler opened the Hotel del Lago, where Bernhard Förster, Nietzsche's brother-in-law and founder of the Nueva Germania colony, died in 1889. From 1898 the Swiss botanist Emil Hassler lived here, gathering some 13,000 specimens of Paraguayan flora.
Tips
- In January and February book accommodation well ahead; weekend traffic is heavy.
- The municipal beaches are open for recreation, but the lake water is not safe for swimming (MADES, 2025-2026).
- If you're coming for the day, leave Asunción early and head back before the Sunday-afternoon rush.
Best time: December to February for the summer buzz; October for Oktoberfest; the rest of the year, for quiet weekends.
What to try
- Paraguayan craft beer in the downtown bars
- German-style dishes in the town's restaurants
