Puente Remanso
The 1978 bridge over the Paraguay River linking Mariano Roque Alonso with Villa Hayes and opening the door to the Chaco.
What it is
The Remanso Bridge crosses the Paraguay River and links the Eastern Region with the Chaco, between Mariano Roque Alonso and Villa Hayes. It is the gateway for the Transchaco Highway and where much of the freight traffic to the Chaco passes. It was built between 1975 and 1978 and inaugurated on 19 August 1978. The structure is prestressed concrete, with a box section built using successive cantilevers; it is 550 metres long between end supports (1,370 metres in total) with a 170-metre central span.
What to see and do
- First crossing of the Paraguay River heading to the Chaco
- Prestressed concrete engineering work
- Views of the river and wetlands
Did you know…?
It is one of three bridges linking the Eastern and Western regions, along with the Nanawa and Héroes del Chaco bridges.
The central span is 170 metres.
History
Works began on 16 December 1975 by a Spanish construction firm. The name recalls Remanso Castillo, where the explorer Domingo Martínez de Irala set up a settlement.
Tips
- It is a heavily used road bridge: not a place to stop; take photos from the shore or a safe lookout.
- If heading to the Chaco, leave early to avoid truck queues.
A bridge in daily vehicle use on the Transchaco road; traffic conditions are reported by the MOPC, so check before you go.
Best time: Year-round.
