Parque Nacional Vapor Cué
An open-air naval museum: the ships the Paraguayan fleet scuttled in 1869 beside the Yhaguy River.
What it is
Four kilometers from Caraguatay, on the now-gentle Yhaguy River, lie the remains of Paraguay's last fleet from the War of the Triple Alliance. Iron hulls, boilers, artillery pieces and replicas are displayed outdoors in a park of about 54 hectares, with information panels telling the story. Caraguatay, founded on September 24, 1770, keeps old mansions and well-kept streets; on the way, Isla Pucú recalls the Battle of Ka'aguy Juru, fought on that same August 18, 1869.
What to see and do
- Ship remains and replicas on the banks of the Yhaguy
- Caraguatay's old town and its church of the Virgen de las Mercedes
- The August 18 ceremony and historic bike tour to Vapor Cué (August)
- The gateway and memorial to the Battle of Ka'aguy Juru in Isla Pucú
Did you know…?
In 1869 the Yhaguy was navigable by steamships; today it looks almost like a creek.
The Anhambay was a Brazilian ship captured by Paraguay in 1865 that ended up scuttled by the Paraguayans themselves.
Caraguatay is the birthplace of presidents Juan Antonio Escurra and José Félix Estigarribia.
History
In 1869 the last steamships of the Paraguayan navy sailed up the Manduvirá and Yhaguy rivers, fleeing the Allied advance. On August 18, 1869, on Marshal López's orders and to keep them out of Brazilian hands, they were set on fire and sunk. Recovery work began in 1978; the salvaged vessels include the Anhambay (captured from Brazil on January 6, 1865), the Río Apa, the Piraveve, the Salto del Guairá, the Yporá and the Paraná.
Tips
- There's little shade: in summer bring a hat and water.
- Ask at the Caraguatay town hall about hours and guided tours.
- Combine it with the chipa bakeries of Eusebio Ayala, which are on the way.
Daytime visits — check hours and any fees with the town hall.
Best time: Autumn and winter to explore without the heat. August 18, anniversary of the event; September 24, Caraguatay's founding day and the feast of the Virgen de las Mercedes.
