Isla Pucú y la batalla de Ka'aguy Juru
A Cordillera town where, in August 1869, around 1,200 soldiers covered López's retreat after Acosta Ñu.
What it is
Isla Pucú is a Cordillera district about 11 km from Eusebio Ayala and 16 km from Vapor Cué National Park, with some 5,300 inhabitants (2022 census). It has been a municipality since 17 May 1941. Its historical memory is tied to the War of the Triple Alliance. On 17 August 1869, after the battle of Acosta Ñu, Marshal López's troops passed through under Victoriano Bernal; the next day, the 18th, the battle of Ka'aguy Juru was fought, in which some 1,200 Paraguayan soldiers, under colonels Hermosa, Escobar and Bernal, covered the troops' passage. There were around two hundred dead.
