Museo de la Justicia y Archivos del Terror
The Stroessner-era police archive, found in 1992 and recognised by UNESCO, now kept in Asunción.
What it is
The so-called Archives of Terror are the records of the police investigation department during Alfredo Stroessner's dictatorship: files on detainees, confidential reports, surveillance logs and communications between security forces of several Southern Cone countries as part of Operation Condor. Today they are kept by the Centre for Documentation and Archive for the Defence of Human Rights, under the General Directorate of Truth, Justice and Reparation, and are exhibited at the Museum of Justice in Asunción. It is a serious and necessary visit for understanding the country's recent history. You can pair it with the Museum of Memories, which tells the same period from the victims' experience.
