A sugarcane town with 19th-century mansions and a mill that exports organic sugar.
What it is
Guarambaré lives among the cane fields. Its sugar mill, founded in 1930, produces conventional and certified organic sugar exported to the United States, Europe and Asia, and sugarcane (takuare'ẽ in Guarani) gives its name to the festival the town considers its biggest draw. Downtown, late-19th-century mansions and the parish church of Natividad de María still stand. It's a peaceful stop on the PY01 circuit, on the way to Itá.
What to see and do
- The parish church of Natividad de María
- Late-19th-century mansions downtown
- The Takuare'ẽ Festival
- Plaza Santa Librada
Did you know…?
Takuare'ẽ means 'sugarcane' in Guarani.
Some of the historic mansions have been demolished in recent years despite residents' opposition.
It's the most likely birthplace of the poet Emiliano R. Fernández, a towering figure of Guarani-language poetry.
The Takuare'ẽ Festival has been held since 1977; in 1985 it was dedicated to Maneco Galeano, a musician who opposed the dictatorship.
History
A first founding is recognized in 1538, credited to the Spaniard Pablo Franco, and the official date commemorated is May 6, 1682. The first church, of wood, adobe and thatch, dates from 1682; after it collapsed in a storm in 1950, the current church was built from 1953 and inaugurated in 1969.
Tips
- Confirm the date of the Takuare'ẽ Festival before you travel: it changes every year.
- The sugar mill is an industrial plant: ask ahead whether it accepts visitors.
Best time: Year-round; September 8 for the feast of the Nativity of Mary.
