Bottle dance

The dancer who performs with a tower of bottles balanced on her head.

What it is

Its origin is uncertain: one theory traces it to the galopa, which was danced with clay jugs on the head. The dancer performs the basic steps, spins and crouches while balancing one, two or even ten or more bottles stacked on her head. You'll see it at folk shows, dinner shows in Asunción and festivals around the country, accompanied by harp and guitar to a polka or galopa beat.

Did you know…?

There's no fixed number of bottles: it can be anywhere from one to ten or more, depending on the dancer's skill. The bottles often wear a tricolour ribbon recalling the Paraguayan flag, or are decorated with flowers.

Listen to

'Galopera' and other fast polkas usually accompany the act; look for a folk ballet show.
