Expo Tereré
Craft fair in Plaza de la Democracia with guampas, bombillas, thermos flasks and workshops celebrating tereré.
What it is
Every late February, around National Tereré Day, Asunción's Plaza de la Democracia fills with stalls selling everything that surrounds the national drink: guampas and bombillas, thermos flasks and carriers, mortars, tooled leather, carved wood, ñandutí lace, embroidery, ceramics and Indigenous art. In 2024 more than 50 artisans from different towns took part, with hands-on workshops, live demonstrations of the craft process, folk performances and tastings of typical foods. It is a good chance to take home a handmade guampa and chat with the people who make it, in the heart of the capital and in an open-air plaza. Tereré was inscribed by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage in 2020. National Tereré Day is held on the last Saturday of February.
