What to see and do
- 269 bird species recorded, including at least 25 shorebirds
- More than 3% of the world's buff-breasted sandpipers use the bay during migration
- An Important Bird Area and a site in the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network
- Sunset views over the Paraguay River from the Costanera waterfront
Access
Protected as a reserve by Law 2715 of 2005. You can see it from Asunción's Costanera, steps from downtown; the coordinates mark the Banco San Miguel wetland. The Banco San Miguel peninsula is best explored with organized groups or birding guides. The best seasons are spring and summer, when the migratory shorebirds arrive. Bring binoculars and don't go alone to isolated areas.
