San Antonio y su Paseo Costero
A military outpost from 1672 on the Paraguay River, with a waterfront promenade opened in September 2025.
What it is
San Antonio is about 20 km south of Asunción, on the Paraguay River, and has 57,843 inhabitants (2022 census). Its ports saw Brazilian troops landing during the War of the Triple Alliance, and the Ytororó stream, where the battle of that name was fought, is nearby. To visit: the San Antonio de Padua parish, rebuilt in 1966 after a fire; Plaza de los Héroes, with a monument to fishermen; the Maestro Claudio Báez House of Culture, with a historical focus; and the Paseo Costero, a recreational space on the river opened on 24 September 2025. The patron saint festival with the Expo San Antonio is held in June, and the Pira Caldo (fish stew) Festival in August.
