Lambaré
Asunción's neighbor at the foot of Cerro Lambaré, home to the legend of a Guarani chief and the much-loved burreritas.
What it is
Lambaré is almost another Asunción neighborhood, but with an identity all its own. Its name and the statue in front of the town hall recall Chief (Cacique) Lambaré, a figure of Guarani resistance against the conquistadors whose actual existence historians still debate. On the border with the capital rises Cerro Lambaré (156 m), which belongs to Asunción, with its hilltop monument and river views.
What to see and do
- The statue of Chief Lambaré, in front of the town hall
- Climb Cerro Lambaré, on the Asunción border, for views of the Paraguay River
- The Burrerita Monument (1987), on Avenida Cacique Lambaré
- The parish church of Our Lady of the Rosary (1846)
Did you know…?
The hilltop monument (1979-1982) is the work of the Spanish sculptor Juan de Ávalos; the statue of Stroessner it once included was removed on October 7, 1991.
Since the Costanera Sur avenue opened in July 2024, Cerro Lambaré has drawn many more visitors.
History
It was founded on October 1, 1768 under Governor Carlos Morphi. Its parish church of Our Lady of the Rosary was built in 1846, under Carlos Antonio López. After the War of the Triple Alliance it was occupied by the Brazilian army from 1869 to 1876. From the postwar years until the mid-20th century, the 'burreritas' (country women who carried their produce to Asunción on donkeyback) became a local symbol, remembered today with monuments and celebrations.
Tips
- Cerro Lambaré belongs to Asunción (Jukyty neighborhood) and is easy to reach via the Costanera Sur.
- The river view is best in the late afternoon.
Best time: Afternoons from autumn through spring.
