Gabriel Casaccia
Novelist and journalist
What it is
Born in Asunción to Italian parents, he spent his childhood in Areguá, the town he would portray in most of his work. He is regarded as the father of modern Paraguayan narrative. His best-known novel, 'La Babosa' (1952), gives an unflinching look at life in that town and was much debated in Paraguay. He wrote in exile in Argentina; he published 'La llaga' (1964, Kraft Prize), 'Los exiliados' (1966) and 'Los herederos' (1975), and 'Los Huertas' appeared after his death. His remains rest in the Areguá cemetery.
