Francisco Solano López

President and marshal in the War of the Triple Alliance

What it is

The son of Carlos Antonio López, he led the country in the war against Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. He died at Cerro Corá on March 1, 1870, a date now marked as Heroes' Day. He remains a hotly debated figure.
