What it is

Tres Kandú (“three hills”, according to Wikipedia) is the highest point in Paraguayan territory, at 842 m above sea level. It sits on the border of the departments of Guairá and Caazapá, within the municipality of General Eugenio A. Garay, and is part of the Ybytyruzú range. Geologically it shares the origin of that range: Early Cretaceous lavas and alkaline dikes tied to the eastern edge of the Asunción Rift.

From the top you see the whole range. In the past the summit held radio relay stations of the Army and ANDE; today they are abandoned. For reference, Cerro Lambaré in Asunción is about 156 m.

How to visit

The climb is demanding and it is best done with a local guide. Ask the municipality of General Garay about the trail status and requirements, since access has been closed temporarily at times.
