Pozo Colorado
The Chaco's great crossroads, where the Transchaco meets the road to Concepción: a must-stop for every traveler.
What it is
Halfway between Asunción and the colonies, Pozo Colorado lives off its location: here the PY09 crosses the PY05, which leads to Concepción and on toward Brazil. Its official name is General Luis Irrazábal. Service stations, roadside restaurants and shops cater to truckers, ranchers and travelers. All around stretches the humid Chaco of palm groves and marshes, with historic estancias and Southern Enxet communities; nearby is Makxawaya, the Anglican “English Mission.” It's a good place to stretch your legs, fill up and watch birds in the roadside wetlands.
What to see and do
- Junction of routes PY09 (Transchaco) and PY05 (to Concepción); toll at km 267
- Roadside restaurants and service stations for travelers
- Palm groves and marshes of the Lower Chaco, with waterbirds
- Makxawaya Mission (the English Mission), in the Southern Enxet community
Did you know…?
The name (“red well”) comes from the well dug by the first settlers, which at first brought up lots of red earth.
From 1988 to 1999 it was the capital of Presidente Hayes department.
George Lohman Canfield came to own some 400,000 hectares and around 150,000 head of cattle.
History
This was the land of the Southern Enxet, who called it Yexwase' Yamelkyet. From 1889, Anglican missionaries led by Wilfred Barbrooke Grubb founded missions in the area. Around 1914 the American George Lohman Canfield established the Pozo Colorado estancia, a pioneer of Chaco cattle ranching. The Transchaco linked it to Asunción in 1961, and from 1988 to 1999 it was the capital of Presidente Hayes department.
Tips
- Fill up here: it's one of the last places with full services before the Central Chaco.
- To visit Indigenous communities or the English Mission, get in touch with their representatives beforehand.
Best time: May to September; at dawn the roadside marshes fill with birds.
