Mayor José Martínez, pueblo de carretas junto al Estero Bellaco
A southern Ñeembucú village with an old-world feel, Laguna Falcón and Curuzú Abá port, named after a hero killed at Tuyutí.
What it is
Mayor Martínez is in southern Ñeembucú, on the Paraná and in the Estero Bellaco area. It still has an old-world feel: carts and horseback herders still travel its streets. It has about 4,200 inhabitants, but fewer than 900 live in the urban area. Its name honours Major José de Jesús Martínez, a native of the area, mortally wounded by a cannon shot at the Battle of Tuyutí on 24 May 1866; it was previously called Pedro González. The landscape is of marshes and swamps, with Laguna Falcón to the north and the Curuzú Abá port on the border with General Díaz. It is a quiet stop on a tour of the Great War sites in Ñeembucú.
