Carmen del Paraná
The Rice Capital boasts a riverfront promenade several kilometers long, three beaches and the Tacuary battlefield.
What it is
Carmen del Paraná looks out over the Yacyretá reservoir with an 8-10 km promenade that forms a peninsula: along some stretches you can't see the far shore and the river feels like the sea. It has three beaches — Tacuary, the busiest, Ybycu'i and Pirayú — and a small-town feel, surrounded by rice paddies and silos. The old railway station houses a history museum with locomotives and remains of the bridge over the Tacuary stream, scene of a key battle in 1811.
What to see and do
- Tacuary beach and the promenade on the reservoir
- The history and railway museum in the old station
- Batalla de Tacuarí Municipal Park
- The patron saint's festival of the Virgen del Carmen (16 July)
Did you know…?
Buried here is Pedro Ríos, the 'little drummer of Tacuarí', a 12-year-old boy from Corrientes who died in the 1811 battle.
The rise of the Yacyretá reservoir changed the natural course of the Tacuary stream.
History
Founded on 24 April 1843, it was an important station on the southern railway. On the banks of the Tacuary stream, on 9 March 1811, Paraguayan forces defeated the Buenos Aires expedition led by Manuel Belgrano, an episode that preceded independence in May 1811. Around 2012 the town completed its riverfront promenade, part of the Yacyretá works.
Tips
- In summer, get to Tacuary beach early: it is the busiest.
- It's about 35 km from Encarnación: an easy day trip.
- Ask the local tourist office for museum opening times (check before you go).
Best time: December to March for the beach; 16 July for the patron saint's festival; 9 March, the anniversary of Tacuary.
What to try
- River fish
- Dishes made with local rice
