Abaí, el pueblo del aserradero y la terminal del ramal Fassardi
A village founded by a timber entrepreneur that had a railway terminal until 1988 and has been a district since 1960.
What it is
Abaí is a village in Caazapá department that grew around the sawmill and rail station of José Fassardi's company. It was built as a timber resupply point and as a small settlement for employees. Until 1988 a railway terminal operated there, from which the company's produce and timber were loaded. It split from San Juan Nepomuceno and became a district on 4 October 1960. It suits those interested in the forestry and railway history of the south-east: it offers fewer services than other towns, but it helps explain how the train and timber shaped many localities in the region.
