Barrancas erosionadas de Ypané (cárcavas del Cuaternario)
Gullies carved by water in recent clayey sands, near where Pleistocene glyptodont fossils have been found.
What it is
In the Ypané district there is a badlands landscape that formed through water erosion of poorly consolidated Quaternary sediments, mostly clayey sands. It is an example of how rain carves soft ground.
Fossils of glyptodonts and other Pleistocene animals of Paraguay have been found nearby, according to studies cited by the UNA inventory. That makes it interesting for both geomorphology and palaeontology. The same study rates it as highly fragile and vulnerable, with no municipal protection.
How to visit
It is a fragile site with no visitor infrastructure. If you are in Ypané, ask the municipality whether there is access, and do not step on the gullies or collect material.
