What it is
This name covers several native members of the myrtle family, from grassland shrubs to forest trees, that bear round yellow or greenish fruits, very fragrant and sweet-sour. They are eaten fresh or made into juices, ice creams and homemade liqueurs, and they attract many birds. They grow in open country, forest edges and savannas of the Eastern Region.

“Guavira poty” (guavirá flower) is one of the best-known songs by the popular poet Emiliano R. Fernández, and it gave its name to a folk festival in Caballero (Paraguarí).

Blooms in spring (September and October) and fruits in late spring (November and December).
Where
The grasslands of Paraguarí, Cordillera, Caaguazú and the northern Cerrado. In season it's sold at fairs and markets.
