Lancehead viper (yarará)

Bothrops diporus · jarara

A venomous viper common in fields and forests; knowing and respecting it is the best prevention.

What it is

A viper with a triangular head, brown hook- or “telephone”-shaped markings along its sides and heat-sensing pits between the eye and the nostril. It hunts rodents at night and by day lies still and camouflaged in the leaf litter. It is venomous and causes many of the region's snakebite incidents, almost always when someone steps on or touches it without seeing it.

Did you know…?

Paraguay has several species of yarará. If bitten, go to a health center immediately, with no tourniquets, cuts or suction.

Where

Grasslands, forest edges and farm plots across most of the country, especially in the warm months. On trails, wear closed shoes and watch where you step.
