Toco toucan
Ramphastos toco · tukã
The largest toucan, with a huge orange bill; it frequents forests, savannas and even gardens.
What it is
The biggest of the toucans, it has black plumage, a white throat and a giant but lightweight orange bill. It eats fruit, eggs and nestlings, and in flight you can recognize its cross-shaped silhouette. Although it seems like a jungle bird, in Paraguay it lives in open habitats: the Humid Chaco, the Cerrado, gallery forests and sometimes city parks.
Did you know…?
Its bill works like a radiator. Scientific studies have shown the bird uses it to regulate body temperature and shed heat when it's very hot.
Where
The Humid Chaco, the Cerrado of Concepción and San Pedro, and the riverside forests of the Paraguay River. It's often seen flying at dawn.
