Amazona aestiva
A green parrot with a blue forehead and yellow face, heavily targeted by the pet trade.
What it is
A sturdy green parrot with a blue forehead, yellow face and red patches on its wings. It lives in gallery forests and the savannas of the Chaco and the Cerrado, and at dusk it gathers in noisy flocks heading back to their roosts. Its talent for mimicking voices makes it a target of the illegal trade, which, along with forest clearing, has pushed it into the Near Threatened category.
Did you know…?
It is very long-lived: in captivity it can live for several decades, and a parrot bought as a chick may stay with a family for a lifetime. That's exactly why you should never buy one.
Where
Forests of the Humid and Dry Chaco, the Cerrado of Concepción and San Pedro, Lake Ypoá and the Bay of Asunción. Never buy wild parrots.
