Hyacinth macaw

Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus · gua'a hovy

The world's largest flying parrot, an intense cobalt blue; in Paraguay it is scarce and found only in the north.

What it is

Measuring about a meter from head to tail tip, it is the largest macaw. It has cobalt-blue plumage, a yellow ring around the eye and a bill strong enough to crack palm nuts. Habitat loss and capture for the pet trade have made it vulnerable, which is why it is listed in CITES Appendix I.

Did you know…?

In Paraguay it reaches the southern limit of its range, in the Pantanal and the northern Cerrado.

Where

The Alto Paraguay Pantanal and the north of the country. Sightings are sporadic, so it's best to go with specialist guides.
