Ulises Icardi · CC BY-SA 4.0Tañarandy: Good Friday and the Yvága Rape
Twenty thousand candles light up the “path to heaven” while living tableaux recreate the Passion: the most magical night of Holy Week.
What it is
Since 1992, the community of Tañarandy, in San Ignacio, has turned Good Friday into an experience of art and faith created by the artist Koki Ruiz, who died in 2024 and whose daughters now carry on his work. The Virgin of Sorrows is carried in procession along the Yvága Rape (“path to heaven” in Guarani), some 2 km lit by around 20,000 candles, torches and oil lamps, to La Barraca, where living tableaux recreate scenes of the Passion inspired by classical paintings.
What to see and do
- Procession along the candlelit path
- Living tableaux at La Barraca
- Estacioneros (traditional Passion chanters) and folk hymns
Tips
Arrive several hours early and book accommodation in San Ignacio or Santa María weeks in advance. Bring insect repellent and something to sit on. Combine it with the nearby Jesuit reductions.
