Feast of Saint Balthazar in Kamba Kua
Drums, candombe and dances from the Afro-Paraguayan community of Kamba Kua in honor of Saint Balthazar, its patron saint.
What it is
The Afro-Paraguayan community of Kamba Kua descends from the lancers who arrived with José Gervasio Artigas in 1820, and in honor of Saint Balthazar it keeps alive the country’s foremost Afro-descendant cultural tradition. During the novena (nine days of prayer) there are rosaries and Masses, and the main festival adds the drums and dances of the Grupo Tradicional San Baltasar, popular music and dancing late into the night. It’s a warm, community celebration that few visitors know about.
